Lab Sections - Avian
The mission of the avian section, is to provide timely diagnostic service for all avian accessions. The primary focus of the section is to provide diagnostic service for the commercial poultry industry in the State of Missouri. The avian section also provides diagnostic support for veterinarians, the pet bird industry, small poultry flock owners, and Zoos.
The following services are provided by the avian section: Avian necropsy, avian histopathology, avian mycoplasma cultures, mammalian mycoplasma cultures, avian fungal cultures (litter), agar gel immunodiffusion tests for avian influenza, infectious laryngotracheitis, and hemorrhagic enteritis; hemagglutination inhibition tests for Mycoplasma gallisepticum, M. synoviae, M. meleagridis, Newcastle disease virus, infectious bronchitis virus (Mass and Conn); rapid plate agglutination tests for M. gallisepticum, M. synoviae, M. meleagridis and Salmonella pullorum; ELISA serology tests for M. gallisepticum, M. synovia, Newcastle Disease, Bordetella avium in turkeys and tube agglutination tests for Salmonella pullorum and S. typhimurium. The avian section is also fully integrated into the VMDL information management system and relies extensively on input from other laboratory sections which provide services in the areas of bacteriology, toxicology, histology, virology and molecular biology.
The personnel of the avian section are Abel Vega, Research Specialist and Dr. Daniel P. Shaw, DACVP and Professor of Veterinary Pathobiology.
