Research emphasis: Research has focused on the use and development of a swine model to assess biodistribution, toxicity, and excretion of xenobiotics. Specific justification for the use of swine in chemical bioavailability and distribution studies revolves primarily around biological similarities (anatomical, physiological and biochemical) to humans. Since the mid-90’s, the model has served well as a human surrogate to study the systemic bioavailability of heavy metal and organochlorine contaminants in soils from more than 40 EPA Superfund Site locations across the nation. Since 2005, the swine model has demonstrated further its utility for biodistribution and toxicity studies of nanoparticle constructs and to evaluate the usefulness of nanoparticle contrast agents for x-ray based computed tomography.
