Lab Sections - Histopathology
The VMDL histology/immunohistochemistry (IHC) laboratories are located in the Veterinary Medical Building, rooms E128 & E130. This laboratory section offers a variety of both diagnostic and research services including: routine H&E staining, unstained sectioning, special stains, cryostat sectioning, immunohistochemistry staining and prep work for PCR. We offer histological expertise and many years of experience in a variety of specialized techniques and procedures.
Mission: We facilitate anatomical pathology diagnostics and private investigator research via histological and immunohistochemical procedures, achieving accurate results with a quick turnaround time. As a core facility on the University of Missouri campus, our main focus is to meet the needs of veterinarians, researchers and clients.
The histology laboratory receives formalin-fixed biopsies and tissues obtained at postmortem examinations. These samples are processed, embedded, sectioned, routinely stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) and handed out to our VMDL pathologists for evaluation. Along with H&Es, the laboratory utilities specialized equipment, chemicals, and antibodies for special staining and IHC procedures.
Immunohistochemistry offers a comprehensive panel of immunohistochemical markers for neoplastic and infectious diseases. Markers for neoplastic diseases are intermediate filaments (including different cytokeratins) as well as antibodies against hormones, lymphoid and histiocytic markers, proliferation markers, etc. Infectious disease markers detect common diseases of small animals (distemper virus, toxoplasmosis, leptospirosis, adenovirus, parvovirus, etc.) and large animals (PRRS virus, BVD virus, circovirus, IBR virus, neosporosis, etc.).
