The University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine and Veterary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory offer an annual Veterinary Diagnostic Pathology Externship designed to help junior and senior veterinary students explore careers in diagnostic pathology.
This hands-on externship introduces students to multiple areas of laboratory medicine, with training tailored to each participant’s individual interests within diagnostic anatomic pathology. Rotations are available in mammalian necropsy, avian necropsy and histopathology. Externs are paired with a faculty mentor and become active members of the diagnostic service team.
The VMDL supports teaching hospitals and private veterinary clinics across Missouri and receives cases involving small animals, horses, ruminants, poultry, wildlife and exotic species. Externs work alongside faculty and resident pathologists while gaining exposure to a collaborative diagnostic environment. Participants may also attend clinical and diagnostic rounds, journal clubs and seminars offered through the college.
Located within the University of Missouri, the VMDL is part of a major research university serving approximately 34,000 students across 15 schools and colleges. The university combines the resources of a nationally competitive research institution with the collaborative atmosphere of a close-knit academic community.

- A 250-word personal statement describing prior experience or interest in diagnostic pathology and post-graduation goals
