Interpretation

General interpretation for fructosamine concentration in diabetic dogs and cats*
Good glycemic control 300-400 µmol/L
Fair glycemic control 400-450 µmol/L
Poor glycemic control >450 µmol/L

  • In addition to persistent hyperglycemia, hypothyroidism may increase fructosamine concentration.

  • Hyperthyroidism and severe hypoalbuminemia or total hypoproteinemia can decrease fructosamine concentration.

  • Hemolysis can cause erroneous fructosamine results; samples with moderate to marked hemolysis are not suitable for testing.

*These interpretation guidelines were adapted from the references below and are provided only as a general suggestion. Serial monitoring of fructosamine in patients is typically of more value than single measurements. Interpretation guidelines are based on Zeugswetter FK, Beer R, Schwendenwein I.
