Sample Collection – Mycology

  • The ideal sample will be collected from the edge of an active lesion before antifungal treatment has been started. Use aseptic technique to minimize contamination.
  • Typical samples for superficial mycoses (ringworm) are hair and skin scrapings.
  • Place samples in a dry, sterile screw-capped tube or a small paper envelope.
  • If a deep mycotic infection is suspected, submit tissues, fluids, or swabs as for Bacteriology.
  • Label the sample “Human Risk” if a zoonotic (transmissible to people) mycosis is suspected. See “Precautions” under Sample Shipping for further instructions.
