- The ideal sample will be collected from the edge of an active lesion before antifungal treatment has been started. Use aseptic technique to minimize contamination.
- Typical samples for superficial mycoses (ringworm) are hair and skin scrapings.
- Place samples in a dry, sterile screw-capped tube or a small paper envelope.
- If a deep mycotic infection is suspected, submit tissues, fluids, or swabs as for Bacteriology.
- Label the sample “Human Risk” if a zoonotic (transmissible to people) mycosis is suspected. See “Precautions” under Sample Shipping for further instructions.
