- Fecal samples
- For flotation:
- Submit approximately 2 grams (2 teaspoons) of fresh feces
- Send sample overnight on ice, Monday-Thursday.
- Do not freeze sample.
- For Baermann exam for larvae:
- Submit at least 10 g of feces (2 tablespoons)
- Feces must be fresh; Hookworms, Strongyloides, and Strongylid ova may hatch in older specimens and are difficult to differentiate from the larvae of lungworms.
- Send sample overnight on ice, Monday-Thursday
- For direct smear:
- Submit sample at room temperature immediately upon sample collection.
- Samples must be microscopically evaluated within 30 minutes of collection.
- For flotation:
- Cryptosporidium
- Fresh feces or thin air dried smears prepared from fresh feces are the specimens of choice. Samples should be brought directly to the lab or sent for next day delivery. Include cold packs in shipment.
