Anatomical Pathology Residency

The Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (VMDL), Department of Veterinary Pathobiology, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri is accepting applications for a 3-year residency in veterinary anatomic pathology, to begin August 1st, 2024. The successful candidate will join seven anatomic pathology faculty members, one avian pathologist and two additional residents in providing diagnostic services to the MU Veterinary Health Center (VHC) and external clients of the VMDL. Candidates must be eligible to obtain a Missouri veterinary license; this requires a passing NAVLE score in addition to graduation from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school or ECFVG or PAVE certificate.

The VMDL provides in-depth laboratory diagnostic support to veterinary practitioners, livestock and poultry industry interests, companion animal interests, wildlife conservationists, scientists utilizing animals in their research at the university and elsewhere in the state, regulatory officials, and clinicians of the MU VHC. The VMDL, accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD), is a National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) Level I laboratory and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN) Tier I laboratory. The VMDL receives more than 55,000 accessions and the Anatomical Pathology section handles approximately 1,000 necropsy cases and more than 10,000 biopsy cases each year.

Residents are trained in gross and microscopic examination of specimens from necropsy and biopsy cases submitted and are expected to attend pertinent rounds (e.g., pathology rounds, dermatopathology rounds, neuropathology rounds, JPC Wednesday Slide Conference, ocular pathology rounds). The program is designed to qualify the trainee to successfully sit for anatomic pathology certification examination by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.

Salary for this position will begin at $35,000 plus benefits, with annual increases expected. Professional development funds are additionally provided.

Vesicular Stomatitis Virus has been Confirmed in the US

Vesicular Stomatitis Virus has been confirmed in 5 states in the US (Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, Texas, and Wyoming) as of August 15th, 2019. For more information and current situation reports, please visit the USDA’s website. If clinical signs consistent with Vesicular Stomatitis are identified by a practicing veterinarian in Missouri, the state veterinarian’s office should be notified immediately so that an FAD (Foreign Animal Disease) investigation can be initiated. The Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician will handle all sample collection and submission for diagnostic testing. Please note the following changes:

  1. Equine VSV samples go directly to NVSL in Ames, Iowa.
  2. Non-equine (such as bovine) VSV samples go to NVSL FADDL on Plum Island, NY.
  3. Bovine VSV suspect cases, samples may be submitted to VMDL to rule out FMD. VSV samples go to FADDL, Plum Island, NY.

New MU VMDL Street Address

The city of Columbia has made address changes to a number of university street addresses.  810 E. Campus Loop will no longer be a valid street address to submit to.  Please carefully review the information below to assure safe delivery to the VMDL:

Message from the Director

The University of Missouri Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (VMDL) is a full-service veterinary diagnostic laboratory and Missouri’s only laboratory accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. The VMDL is a Level I Lab of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network, Tier I Lab of the FDA Veterinary Laboratory Response Network, and a National Poultry Improvement Plan authorized lab. The VMDL maintains an effective quality assurance and quality control program.

The VMDL has formal anatomical pathology, clinical pathology, and clinical microbiology training programs. The VMDL faculty hold academic appointments in the Departments of Veterinary Pathobiology and Veterinary Biomedical Sciences. The director is administratively responsible to the dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine for the overall operation of the laboratory and its multiple missions of public service, teaching, research and continuing education/extension.

The VMDL faculty and staff work diligently to provide relevant, timely and cost-effective diagnostic services to our clients and to create a positive learning environment for our students and residents. In 2024, veterinarians, animal owners and researchers from 103 Missouri counties and cities, as well as from 51 states and provinces outside Missouri, continued to rely on the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory’s (VMDL) diagnostic services. The lab performed approximately 63,500 total cases and conducted nearly 204,500 tests.

About the MU VMDL

The VMDL is a full-service laboratory accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). The VMDL provides in-depth laboratory diagnostic support to veterinary practitioners, livestock and poultry industry interests, companion animal interests, wildlife conservationists, scientists utilizing animals in their research throughout the university, state and regulatory officials, and clinicians of the MU Veterinary Health Center.
